After my last post – about losing your self-esteem and being insecure – I have been asked to write a topic about how to boost your self-esteem. Everyone has their own ways when it comes to dealing with difficult situations, but to rebuild your confidence is not that easy as you think. It has become a way, your way, of thinking and living. It’s a wall you have to break through slowly, otherwise you will keep hurting yourself. So, boosting your self-esteem takes time. But at the end it is all worth it.
These are five ways to boost your self-esteem:
1. Know your worth.
This is the first as well as the most important step. Don’t think that you are less worthy or less important than others. You are not! Everyone who’s trying to denigrate you has their own self-esteem issues, because they can only be happy with themselves when they think that others are ‘lower’ than they are. So, they are trying to make others look ‘lower’, by how? By saying bad things about them, by getting under their skin and breaking their self-esteem. Don’t fall for this nonsense.
Neither fall for the standard of success defined by society. For a long time you see that people with particular skin tone, religion, way of dressing (and many more) are labeled as “succesful” and anyone else can forget it. Gradually, you will see people stepping up against this. Because success has nothing to do with your skin tone, religion, way of dressing and so many other factors. It it about YOU! Your heart, your mindset, your capabilities.
2. Find yourself.
Who are you? What are your goals in life? Sit down and think about the things you want to achieve in life. It could be very serious, like: How do you see yourself in ten years? But you can make it fun for yourself: Make a bucketlist for example next year or for the next five years. You can colour it as you like.
Finding yourself has also to do with what made you the person that you are right now. What made you so insecure? It may be that you are still holding on something that happened in the past. You should give it a place and let it go, because this will be your next journey in life. Learn from the past and embrace your future.
3. Learn to accept compliments.
You should stay positive! Try to don’t say negative things about yourself, it will only make you more insecure. Most people with a low self-esteem like to give compliments, but can’t accept them. They can say the most amazing, sweet and lovely things about others, but slash theirselves. Accept compliments, because they are said for a reason. You are just super-duper awesome!
4. Don’t worry about others.
It’s not about what others will think about you, it’s about what makes YOU feel happy and comfortable. You will never be able to make everyone happy. There is always a person who is not satisfied with what you are doing. It could be out of jealousy, hatred or just out of stupidity. So make your happiness be the priority and you will be fine. Your smile can make a lot of difference.
5. Step out of your comfort-zone
Stepping out of your comfort-zone will learn you to deal with certain situations. I know it is a safe feeling, but you should take risks in life. Face your fears. Do the things you thought you would never do, making a bucketlist can help you with that. You can always ask your friends to join you. Visit workshops and events. Find your passion. Meet new people! Expand your network.
